The Court Thorn

Standing just over the brow of the hill between High and Low Hesket, the Court Thorn is one of the most highly treasured memories of the old Forest of Inglewood.

Consisting of three heavy stone slabs with a Hawthorn growing through a hole in the centre, it was the Annual Meeting Place on the Feast of St Barnabus (June 11th) for the assembly of swains or freeholders within the Nether Ward of the old Inglewood Forest.

Tenants would pay their rent to the Lord of the Forest, and other matters, such as poaching, would be dealt with.
